PROCESSING HERBS
Capsules
Are
the most popular way to take herbs due to it's convenience that avoids the
bitter taste, and the best way of preparation to provide exact dosage.
Decoction
The
essence of the courser herbs such as the bark and roots are usually extracted
by simmering for 10 to 20 minutes until about one third of the water has
evaporated.
Extracts
Have
a highly concentrated alcohol base in liquid form which is derived from pure
herbs. and is a convenient way to take herbs, especially for those that can't
swallow capsules.
Fomentation
This
is an external application of herbs using a towel or cloth soaked in the
desired tea and then applied to the affected area. Generally this is used for
swelling, pain, colds and flu.
Infusion
Is
the most common way of preparing herbs with a teaspoon of the herb is placed in
a cup and 1 cup of hot water added to it. It is then steeped for 3-5 minutes,
and strained to drink.
Poultice
A
warm volume of powered herbs are applied directly to the skin. A hot, moist
towel is then placed over the herb and left on until it cools. This method is
used for swelling, pain, and muscle spasms.
Salve
Blend
in a pot, 3 ounces powered herb, 7 ounces cocoa butter or pure vegetable
shortening and 1 ounce beeswax. Cover and put on low heat for 1-2 hours. When
it is cooled, it should be firm but pliable enough to use.
